As a piano teacher, his approach is based on developing a solid and rounded technique whilst encouraging the creativity of musical expression, understanding and real musicianship. He is not interested in producing robots designed merely to pass examinations. Enthusiasm, focus and co-operation are the qualities which he requires from students, preferring the notion of self-directed learning to a highly prescriptive "text-book" approach. He encourages examinations at all levels from grade one through to diploma but these are kept in perspective. Students who wish to enter competitions, likewise receive complete support both musically and in other ways as performing music is often stressful and within the competitive arena, it can be quite frightening. He often composes pieces for students to work specifically on points of technique and also teaches improvisation and jazz piano with examinations in that field too, if desired. |
